Technical Projects#
Synthetic Voice Translation for Low-Resource Languages
- Engineered a full speech translation system designed to generate synthetic voices for underrepresented languages
- Fine-tuned the VITS Lingala OpenBible model on Lingala Read Speech Corpus to improve pronunciation and speech clarity
- Built a modular pipeline integrating Speech-to-Text, Machine Translation and Text-to-Speech systems
- Allows speakers of low-resource languages to watch any video that was initially created in English, in their own language
- Presented findings at Tech Show London’s Big Data & AI World 2025
Automatic Speech Recognition for Low-Resource Languages
- Developed a automatic speech recognition (ASR) model for Lingala using the XLSR-53 architecture
- Achieved a WER of 0.21 after fine-tuning on the Lingala Read Speech Corpus
- Preprocessed raw audio by standardising sampling rates, creating vocabulary files and aligning transcriptions
- Implemented custom data collators for dynamic padding and efficient batch training
- Presented the system at the UKBlackTech Christmas Social, highlighting its potential for inclusive voice technology
Sickle Cell CNN Classifier
- Designed and trained a convolutional neural network (CNN) using PyTorch to classify sickle cell disease from blood smear images collected from the Teso region in Eastern Uganda
- Reached 97.65% validation accuracy and 95.51% test accuracy
- Tackled class imbalance with weighted loss functions and performed PCA to analyse feature separability
- Findings from this project were cited in An Image-based Sickle Cell Detection Method (TechRxiv) for contributions to the methodology and dataset application
